Music is at the heart of the Chilean character and people. La Nueva Canción (New Song) was a folk revival that emerged in the 1960s and reconnected the country to its indigenous and musical roots. Its lyrics were socially conscious and became the soundtrack of the left for decades.

Led by Violeta Parra, others soon followed, Inti Illimani, Quilapayún, Victor Jara and Violeta’s own children, Angel and Isabel.

It has always been the intention of the Hora Chilena project to make the full stories of all those people we interviewed available to the wider public. Not only do they capture an important passage of social history, but the individual tales are, without exception, fascinating personal sagas which resonate for many people beyond Chile and the UK who have found themselves displaced.
